Director of Feature Films - Paul Kyriazi: Capture Your Audience’s Attention
When I was a kid, I had this comedy bubble gum card collection called "Wacky Plagues" (wow, just searched them and they’re selling for big bucks).
Anyways, one of them had a speaker orating to a bored audience. The advice:
To be seen: Stand up. To be heard: Speak up. To be appreciated: Shut up.
So, like a good story or movie, (because a speaker is a story teller) the speaker should be aware of the ’interest’ or ’pace’ of the information he’s giving. Once a point is made and briefly illustrated, move on to the next point.
I’ve seen speakers walk the stage and tell a long drawn out 5 minute story to illustrate one idea. It doesn’t work in these MTV, high speed internet times.
Director Robert Wise (West Side Story), said, "Pace of a story does not mean “speed”. It means capturing the audience’s interest at the beginning and keeping it."
