Frequently Used Models in PowerPoint Presentation: Value Chain SWOT Analysis

This presentation tip is in the category:  Secrets in Top Consulting Firms' Million-Dollar Presentation

An advanced application of a SWOT analysis is to use it against your company’s value chain.  According to Michael Porter, we can divide our value chain up into two categories:

  1. Primary Activities:
functions within an organization that directly relates to the value creation process (e.g., inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, service).
  2. Support Activities:
functions that support the operation of the primary activities (e.g., procurement, Human Resource management, technology development and infrastructure).  These functions help increase efficiencies of the primary activities.  Please note that an organization might not have all these functions internally.  They might not exist at all for smaller companies or they could be outsourced.

Here is an example of how a value chain SWOT analysis layout in a PowerPoint slide:

The goal of this exercise is to identify rooms to improve efficiencies at each function of the value chain.  Compared to the general SWOT analysis, this helps you think in greater detail.

This analysis should give you better ideas on what to do in each area to increase your company’s strengths, overcome weaknesses to capture opportunities for improvement.
